Waboba news & support (latest news on top)

  • Waboba loves Australia, and it seems that Australians are quite fond of waboba. The warm winter season is closing in and there will obviously be a lot of waboba playing on the beaches and in pools. We have had stores selling thousands of waboba balls each during last years first Australian waboba season. This second year we expect that at least a million Auatralians will have played waboba.

  • Its hard to keep secrets, so here is one.. We have already tried a test version of the 2009 pro ball and our test crew just love it! We also tried the first "waboba accessory", not a big thing really, just a glove that makes catching the ball even easier, but surely some players will like it a lot. There are some details that need to be fixed on both items, but all in all we are very confident that waboba players around the world really will enjoy both of these novelties in spring/autumn 2009. So, now we are focusing R&D on making 2010 an even more remarkable year. We have a few ideas on how to improve the ball even more that are very promising. Not that improvement is needed that much from a business point, but we really want to take waboba playing all the way. Its just fun!
  • The Waboba Patent has been approved and published in China. Chinese authorities are already helping us stop copies. Thats good news for all waboba players as it helps a lot to prevent low quality and even dangerous copies. It also gives us a chance to invest in improving the ball.

Waboba Gamers

  • A lot of gamers have found out that the waboba game can be played with teams of two, three, four and five players. Two player teams are becoming more and more popular. You can use the same rules for two player teams as three player teams (see "the game"). If you try four and five player teams you should settle for one round to win the match (instead of three).
  • Try to break the 2007 record (still not beaten) of 22 throws one handed. If you set a new record, mail your names and phone number and add a photo or a video clip of the event. All throws and catches shall be done one handed and the ball must bounce at least once on water. Watch the clips to see how it is played. A tip from Georg, one of the first to play waboba, is to play on calm water, throw in genuine baseball style and let the ball bounce once. The 2006 record holder Jacob Keyling adds that you should try to keep an even pace and vary throws slightly so that you do not hit the waves made by the ball.
  • The origin of the Waboba Ball - how it all started.

We have had lots of questions on the origin of the Waboba Ball, so we shall try to give you a short version of the long story. The inventor of the ball and game is a Swede, Jan von Heland. It all started when he threw a frisbee upside down in a pool and made it bounce on the surface. He realized the novelty it would be to use the water surface when playing games. He began testing different shapes and materials that could bounce on water. One summer day in 1998 he discovered that a ball could bounce fairly well on water if it had the right relation in density and softness. But it took many more years and lots of calculations and tests before he had narrowed down the prescription of a ball that could bounce on water well enough to start looking for producers. He found a reliable and professional producer and started developing the first version of a Waboba Ball. When tested it sank immediately. The rest of the story is just about getting the "recipy" of the first test ball right, setting up a business, getting international patent rights etc. The story is still developing with new great distributors and partners, new and better versions of the ball, new markets and most of all, more people having fun with waboba on the beaches of the world.

Copies: There have been some copy waboba balls produced. They are fairly expensive and rare so far, and mostly they do not do any harm to people using them. But one of the copies contained large amounts of a softener (ftalat type) that may be harmful and is forbidden in western countries. That ball is kind of "bubbly" inside, do not let children use it. If you encounter copies (no waboba logo on ball or folder), please mail us so that we can have a chat with the retailer concerning safety and our international patent rights.
